Local golf course receives special cart for those with mobility issues

The North Battleford Golf and Country Club received a gift from Golf Saskatchewan this week.

A special single-rider adaptive golf cart, known as the SoloRider, is now available for those with mobility issues, including spinal injuries, to take to the course and enjoy the game.

Executive director with Golf Saskatchewan, Brian Lee delivered the cart to the local country club Wednesday, and said the equipment is special, because of its ability to handle versatile terrain across the course, and hold the rider into a standing position so that they’re still able to play.

“The SoloRider can go on tee boxes, it can go on putting greens, and pretty much anywhere so long as it’s not more than 25 degrees of slope on the ground, just for safety purposes,” Lee said.

“It can [even] go in a bunker as long as it’s not too steep of an edge, and it allows the person to play the game very similarily to how they used to play, which is half the battle. Golf is a game where people of all abilities can have fun being out there and that can be played for a lifetime.”

The cart is just the third SoloRider unit in the province that Golf Saskatchewan has gotten through the Sask. Sport Adaptive Equipment Grant, with the other two located in Saskatoon and Regina.

Local, Ron Inkster was on-hand Wednesday to try the equipment for the first time, and said he’s looking forward to getting out on the course again to give it a shot and warm up his swing in-game.

“It seems really nice to drive, and while hitting might take a little bit of practice, it will come,” Inkster said. “I’ve been a social golfer in the past and this will really help me to go out with people once in a while and hit the ball again… and hopefully not lose too much money,” he added with a laugh.

“In all seriousness though, I would like to thank the Saskatchewan Golf Association and the North Battleford Golf and Country Club for their participation in bringing this to North Battleford so we can use it,” Inkster added. “Hopefully there will be lots of people who will come give it a try and use it, and maybe take up golf again.”

Director of Golf at the club, Dana Johnson said they’re really happy to be able to offer an opportunity for people like Ron and so many others who may not have been able to in the past, due to physical disability or ailment, to get back on the course.

“This is just a great opportunity for people with a disability to get back to playing the game of golf that they loved for so many years,” Johnson said. “It just makes me so happy for a gentleman like Ron who missed the game of golf for many years, but now is able to take part again. I’m just so proud to see him out and so happy for him. You can see the gleam in his eye, and he’s got that golf bug back, which is great.”
