Métis Nation–Saskatchewan prepped for election

May 26, 2021 | 3:13 PM

Election Day is right around the corner for Métis Nation–Saskatchewan.

Eligible citizens will have the opportunity to go to the polls and cast their vote from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. on May 29. Having been four years since the previous election, the turnout is expected to be strong.

“We do have more voters out to date so far, compared to 2017 at this specific time frame,” Chief Electoral Officer Gwen LaFond said. “So, that’s a good thing.”

LaFond said there’s been some challenges in preparing for the election this year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, with 12 regions and dozens of executive and regional candidates. However, the 2020 provincial election served as good experience for operating in this environment.

“We’re pretty familiar with how polls need to be set up to accommodate social distancing and having the right PPE in place.”

To prove eligibility, voters will have to provide a Métis citizenship card or letter from the registry, a valid Saskatchewan health card and identification that provides their name and address, such as a driver’s license or utility bill. LaFond said photo ID isn’t necessarily required in each circumstance, as some 16 year-olds may be eligible to vote.

“Sometimes in that regard, it’s a letter from their school or institution, once again showing their name and address,” she said.

This election will decide regional representatives and the positions of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. LaFond said they’re excited for voters to turn up, hopefully in even higher numbers than expected.

“It’s always good to exercise your right for democracy and, in a way, have your voice heard.”

Voting locations and other information regarding the election is available at the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan website.
