BRCC urging area residents to get vaccinated to stop spread of COVID-19

The Battlefords Regional Community Coalition (BRCC) leaders are coming together to encourage everyone in the region to get their shot for the prevention of COVID-19.

They are taking part in a promotion called: “Don’t Wait, Vaccinate.”

North Battleford Mayor David Gillan said based on information circulating on the social media, it appears some people may be reluctant to get the vaccine. But he said people need to participate in order to keep the population as a whole safe.

“As a group, we thought it’s very important to be promoting vaccinations right now because there are some people that are hesitating, and we want to show that we have been vaccinated,” he said. “As leaders we feel it is very important that everybody does their part, not just for themselves but for the general public and those most vulnerable.”

Gillan said the leaders in the group aim to send the message that the sooner everyone gets vaccinated, the sooner life will return to normal.

“Now the age limit [for the vaccine] is very low; it’s 12 and up basically,” he said. “So we really feel and hope that everybody does their part.”

Gillan said the group believes if everyone gets vaccinated it will create a herd immunity to protect the population from this infectious disease.

He added there is consensus amongst the BRCC leaders that encouraging people to get their vaccinations “is the right thing to be doing.”

The BRCC is comprised of representatives from the town and city, as well as five area Indigenous communities—Moosomin, Sweetgrass, Saulteaux, Little Pine First Nation, and Lucky Man Cree Nation.

The BRCC organization was created in 2020 through the partnership formed from the Sacichawasihc Relationship Agreement that allows Indigenous and municipal governments to work together in a unified effort in the spirit of reconciliation.
