On Air for Healthcare Radiothon raises $165,000 for BUH Foundation capital campaign

This year’s On Air for Healthcare Radiothon was another huge success. The event raised a total of about $165,000.

Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation Executive Director Claudette McGuire was thrilled with the community response when the all-day event wrapped up at 6 p.m. Friday. McGuire thanked everyone who donated to show their support.

“I’m very excited; this is outstanding,” she said. “One is always very excited when as an organization, along with the Jim Pattison Media group, we’ve raised $165,000 if not more.”

She said the final tally will be available Monday afternoon.

Funds raised in this year’s campaign will benefit replacing two of the anaesthetic machines in the operating room at the Battlefords Union Hospital.

McGuire said the capital campaign will continue to raise more funds to help purchase these machines which are estimated at just over $200,000 together.

“When you think about the fact it was through a fundraiser 15 years ago that brought in those four new anaesthetic machines,” she said. “And, here we are doing it again… The Battlefords and surrounding communities have stepped up. This $165,000 is going to go a very long way.”

The 12-hour marathon event that started at 6 a.m. was hosted by The Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation, in partnership with 1050 CJNB, Q98, 93.3 The Rock, battlefordsNOW and presenting sponsor, Fisher’s Drug Store.

Dr. Tin Yen who works at Battlefords Union Hospital was among those who came by to make a donation at the radio station drive- through site Friday afternoon.

“I’m here to donate because putting money towards the hospital is always a good cause,” she said. “It’s great environment to work in, and a great community to have the privilege of looking after.“

New this year, the entire event was held outside to follow COVID-19 restrictions for social distancing. All the broadcasting was done live outside too.

Nic Fransoo, morning show host on Q98 and programming director for the Battlefords and Meadow Lake division of Pattison Media, said he was glad to be involved in the fundraiser again this year, to support healthcare that serves the region. He is pleased to see the event was such a success.

“It was incredible,” he said. “It’s a real treat to be a part of this. [To raise] $165,000-plus, was an absolute mind blower. I didn’t know if we were going to get over $100,000, and we went screaming past it. I shouldn’t have doubted it, because this community is amazing.”
