Candidates announced for Métis Nation—Saskatchewan elections

May 2, 2021 | 1:11 PM

The candidates have now been announced for the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan 2021 elections.

Three hopefuls are vying for the area director title for Western Region 1A, covering the Battlefords – Lloydminster area: Carol Delorme, Billy Kennedy (incumbent), and Crystal Miller.

The region extends to Frenchman Butte in the North, Hafford in the East, and Macklin in the South.

Delorme, a Lloydminster resident for 32 years, said if she is elected she wants to advocate for issues to improve the lives of Elders and youth in the area, to ensure their needs are met.

“With the Elders – [that’s] housing and medicare, and with the youth they need to be interested in cultural activities. There are hardly any cultural activities within our region,” Delorme said.

She also plans to advocate for the families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.

Delorme said she first became involved in Métis community interests in the area through her mother and grandmother’s work.

Over the years she has been active in the community and involved in many boards and agencies.

She said just as her family have always stood up for Métis people’s needs, she also hopes to continue that work.

“I like to serve them, listen to them and be their voice,” Delorme said.

Miller of Lashburn said if she is elected she would like to work to create more unity in the region, to bring Métis communities together, and create harmony in governance.

“I believe that the region should come together. That they need to work together hand-in-hand,” Miller said.

She has been involved in the Métis community in the area, sits on the Local 76 board, and attends provincial meetings.

Miller said residents in the region are concerned about many issues including Elder care, housing, Elder transportation, and the need for more youth programs.

She said she hopes to bring positive change if elected. She wants to ensure the rights and needs of Métis people are met.

“My victory is everyone’s victory,” Miller said. “I am going to be a present leader… I want to be involved with the people, I want to hear their stories because from community to community in this region the needs are unique.”

Kennedy, who is also running, was not available for an interview with battlefordsNOW by press time but said he will be able to speak at a future date.

Running for Métis Nation – Saskatchewan on the provincial level for the position of president are Clem Chartier, Karen LaRocque, Glen Hector McCallum (incumbent), and Mary Ann Morin.
