Battlefords Concern for Youth encourages creativity through writing

Battlefords Concern for Youth is encouraging those ages 14-19 to pick up a pen, and let their creativity flow.

The organization’s Creative Stories project is offering creative writing programming each Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., free for youth to attend either via Zoom, or in-person at their community headquarters.

Executive Director, Dani Williams said it’s all about providing a new creative outlet for young people in the community to enjoy amidst the ongoing pandemic.

“With COVID, we’ve been working to create some different kinds of programming that can be available to youth at home, as well as in the office with the ever-changing restrictions,” Williams said.

“We’re just trying to find different ways to bring forth creative ideas for the youth to work with, whether that’s writing or artwork, and allow them to key in on what’s important to them.”

The program, which is slated to continue to at least the end of June – and likely through the summer – is open to join at any point and includes ideas and prompts for participants to try each week, including a look at poetry and other creative writing styles such as long form writing, short stories and even illustrations.

Williams said for any who may not have access to needed materials, Concern for Youth is able to deliver supplies such as books and writing utensils, to ensure all those interested in taking part have a chance to. The goal in the future is to then assemble a book filled with numerous stories and creations for participants to take home and enjoy.

“We’re hoping that eventually we can have something published and distributed locally to showcase all the wonderful things they’ve written,” Williams said.

“Whether they want to make a short story together, or just do individual poetry or their own stories, it’s just about encouraging them to write creatively and have fun creating something.”
