Local students awarded scholarships for music and agriculture

The Battlefords & District Community Foundation has awarded two annual scholarships to local students in the community.

Piper Mutch, a senior at North Battleford Comprehensive High School, was named the recipient of the 2021 Hazel Asmussen Fund, awarded to help post-secondary fine arts students.

Torii Muzyka, a senior at John Paul II Collegiate, was awarded a scholarship from the Peter Lewochko Fund, eligible to students pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture, education or engineering.

Mutch is a multi-faceted musician, trained in trumpet, piano and voice. She will be attending the University of Alberta to pursue a combined bachelor of music/bachelor of education degree program, in hopes of one day teaching music lessons of her own to the next generation.

“I took private lessons and it really had an effect on me and how much it made me love music, so I want to be able to do that for someone else and have them love music the same way I do,” Mutch said. “I’m super thankful to receive this scholarship, and very excited to be able to go and [work towards] a degree in something I love.”

Muzyka will be attending Lakeland College in Vermillion, taking the crop technology program. She is looking forward to working in the agriculture industry and contributing to the family farm where she grew up, just south of Battleford.

Muzyka said receiving the scholarship was something special to her, that she hopes can help inspire other students looking to pursue an agriculture education at the post-secondary level.

“It means a lot to me, because it made me feel seen and heard, and especially since the agriculture business is very competitive,” Muzyka said. “I also hope that seeing photos of local students receiving these scholarships will encourage more students to go into the Ag. Business.”

The Battlefords and District Community Foundation currently manages more than 25 funds that contribute to a range of interests from the arts and health care to post-secondary scholarships and recreation. The organization will distribute over $50,000 in annual community grants and scholarships this year.
