Métis Nation—Saskatchewan election planned for next month

Apr 26, 2021 | 2:15 PM

Métis Nation—Saskatchewan is currently accepting nominations for individuals who wish to run as candidates in the general election coming up next month.

Chief Electoral Officer Gwen LaFond said nominations will be received until 2 p.m., Thursday.

“We encourage people to come in early to get their nomination papers approved,” she told battlefordsNOW.

They must be members of Métis Nation—Saskatchewan and be nominated by five eligible voters.

The full list of candidates will be available Friday morning. When nominations are accepted, the names will be posted to the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan website which offers daily updates.

Nominations can be filed through the chief electoral office or at any of the 12 regional returning offices.

People can submit their nominations locally at the regional returning office at Frontier Mall in North Battleford or at locations in Saskatoon if they wish.

Elections for the Provincial Métis Council will be held for the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary positions. As well, elections are planned for the 12 different regional representatives, for the Northern region 1, 2 and 3; Eastern region 1, 2, 2A and 3; and the Western region 1, 1A, 2, 2A and 3. All positions are for four-year terms. The previous election was held in 2017.

The Battlefords area is within Western region 1A that also includes Lloydminster, Paradise Hill, part of St. Walburg, Macklin, Spiritwood, Hafford and Wilkie.

New for this year’s election, based on legislation passed at the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly, changes have been made for ID requirements for voters.

“This is an important and exciting election for Métis citizens across the province. There will be plenty of opportunities to vote, in a safe, controlled environment,” LaFond said in a release. “The eligibility has changed in this election, and only those who have their Registered Saskatchewan Métis Citizenship Card or a letter issued from the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Registrar will be eligible to vote. Those citizens will bring their card or letter, along with their valid Saskatchewan Health Card and acceptable ID when they vote.”

People can vote May 14 to 21 at the 12 regional returning offices throughout Saskatchewan. They will also be able to vote in their region at the advance poll on May 22, or on Election Day on May 29.
