Allen Sapp Gallery to offer Sewing for Youth classes

Apr 16, 2021 | 5:19 PM

The Allen Sapp Gallery will be offering three Sewing for Youth classes in the community over the next month.

Each lasting two days in duration, the first will take place Apr. 27 and 28 from 6-7:30 p.m., with two to follow May 11 and 12, and May 17 and 19, both also from 6-7:30 p.m.

Lynn Stace is a senior gallery assistant and will be running the program. She said they had originally only planned on doing the April class, but due to community interest, once it filled up they added a second, and ultimately a third class as well, to accommodate as many as possible.

No prior sewing experience is needed to attend the classes. Participants will be taught fundamental skills, from how to use the sewing machines, to what the different stitches are and difference between a back-stitch and front-stitch.

Participants will make two different projects, starting with a bookmark their opening class, before then making their own draw-string bag the second night. Stace said the projects are set up to help introduce and exercise different skills within the activity.

“Making the bookmark first will give them some freedom to try out the stitches and try out the sewing machine,” she said. “Then the second night with the bags, they’ll learn how to make their own basic pattern and then have a draw-string bag to take home at the end of the evening.”

Stace said it’s been great to see so many take an interest in signing up for the classes, as they serve as a great way to learn and develop a new skill.

“We’re just hoping to offer a fun, safe environment where youth can try out something new that maybe they’ve always wanted to try,” she said.

“I think during COVID, people have been wanting to explore new hobbies they can do at home, and this is definitely an introduction to something people can try, and if they like it, easily pick up a second-hand sewing machine and keep pursuing on their own.”

The Sewing for Youth classes are recommended for ages nine and above, with supplies included.

In addition to the sewing classes, the Allen Sapp Gallery will also be hosting a Warm and Cool Painting with Colour Theory class for kids on May 1, and a Mother’s Day craft activity on May 4.
