Apr 13, 2021 | 2:33 PM

Two suspects who fled law enforcement in Onion Lake Cree Nation (OLCN) on Saturday have been charged with multiple criminal offences.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. on April 10, Onion Lake RCMP answered a call alleging shots had been fired into a home in OLCN, where the owner and his family were able to find safety and shelter at a neighbouring residence. The suspects then fled a peace officer and headed towards Lloydminster. No one was injured.

The suspects were pursued by RCMP members from Onion Lake, Maidstone, Lloydminster, Kitscoty and Elk Point. An RCMP Canine Unit, Edmonton Air Services, located and arrest the suspects. The continuing investigation is also being aided by the North Battleford Detachment and the Underwater Recovery and Forensic identification sections.

Twenty-three year-old Layne Pahtayken and 20 year-old Gerome Christopher Okemow of the Onion Lake Cree Nation have been charged with several offences. These include:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a weapon obtained by crime
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon or restricted weapon
  • Possession of a firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in a motor vehicle
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Theft of a truck
  • Mischief over $5,000

Pahtayken faces an additional count of mischief, as well pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm and six counts of failing to comply with undertaking a condition. Both individuals will appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on April 15.
