RM of Britannia receives lagoon funding

The Rural Municipality of Britannia No. 502 is getting a significant infrastructure boost through government funding that will support its lagoon expansion.

Through the Investing in Canada Plan, the RM will receive $237,150 from the federal government and $197,606 from the province. Adding in $158,120 previously raised, that comes to a total of $592,876 for the project.

Located immediately east of Lloydminster, the RM of Britannia is downstream of several communities and has continued to grow. CAO Alan Parkin said they’ve worked on this project for a few years, making the announcement both a thrill and a relief.

“It is a weight off the shoulders to know it’s been approved,” he said.

The RM received the full amount they applied for from the Investing in Canada Plan, which is geared towards supporting infrastructure projects in rural communities. This lagoon project is needed to both enhance the current set up, as well as expand it for future use.

“You have to keep up with the current requirements for wastewater coming out of the community of Greenstreet,” Parkin said. “That’s why we’re looking at doing an expansion on that and an update of that system.”

The RM of Britannia will start engineering work later this year and start construction in 2022. Completion of the project is expected by March of 2023.
