Town holding contest to win a compost bin

The Town of Battleford will start picking up compost from residences beginning April 12. And to encourage people to be more environmentally friendly the town is holding a contest for a chance to win a free compost bin.

The topic was discussed at this week’s council meeting.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the town was initially planning to start collecting compost on April 26. However, since the weather has been so warm of late, more people have been cleaning up their properties. So it made sense to begin the collection earlier.

“Anybody who has got their compost bin overflowing, get it out this Monday coming here and we will start picking up compost,” he told battlefordsNOW.

Leslie hopes the special offer to win a bin might get more people to start using their compost bins.

“We found in our study that a lot of grass and clippings are going into the regular garbage bin which costs all the taxpayers money,” he said. “So anybody who buys a compost bin starting this week, their name will be entered in [the draw].”

Those who purchase a compost bin from the town this spring or summer will have a chance to win one compost bin, valued at $150.

“It’s just a little bit of a contest to help incentivize people to get out and buy a compost bin, and help reduce the amount of compostables that are going into the landfill,” Leslie said.

Anyone who wants to purchase a compost bin should contact the town and it will be delivered to their home.

Councillor Judy Pruden had the idea for the contest. She hopes it will also help encourage people to buy a compost bin from the town as well.

“It’s to try to enhance some community engagement,” she said. “Not everybody has a compost bin. We’re trying to promote more composting…The more we get people involved in town [initiatives] the better the town is going to be.”

More details of the contest will be available at the town’s website and on their Facebook Page.
