Strides spring skating camp to take place next week

Mar 31, 2021 | 9:00 AM

The annual Strides Figure Skating Camp will be held next week at the Don Ross Arena.

The camp, which will feature some of the top figure skating talent in the community from the STAR 1 to Gold level, will be held April 5 to 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. over the Easter break. It follows the wrap up of the official figure skating season, which concluded over the weekend.

Skate Battlefords coach, Cindy Tymoruski runs the camp, and said while they have had to face some unique challenges this year due to the pandemic and resulting restrictions, she was overall very pleased with how the season went, and looks forward to the start of the camp ahead.

“Our main priority this year was being able to skate and stay within the guidelines and follow all the restrictions and requirements, and we did very well,” she said. “It gave us a huge opportunity to think outside the box and do things that we hadn’t previously done before, some of which we will hope to keep moving forward as it turned out really well.”

Having already reached available capacity for next week’s camp, Tymoruski, said it’s been great to see a number of advanced-level skaters jump at the opportunity to continue to work on and hone their craft following the season.

“It’s a chance for skaters come and train for the week, try to complete some tests for the season, and also start working on some future goals they may have for next season,” Tymoruski said, “So we’re looking forward to another strong turnout.”

Following the Strides camp, Tymoruski has traditionally also offered a ‘Can Skate’ program, including both a ‘learn to skate’ and ‘power skating’ course later in the summer. However, due to the pandemic, those events will not be held this year.

Instead, the ice will be taken out of the Don Ross Arena April 12, as the local figure skating club will shift their attention to preparing for the 2021-22 season which usually begins in late August.

All things considered, Tymoruski said she and the club feel fortunate to be able to continue to offer their programing for youth in the community, both through the season and with camps like the one upcoming.

“We’ve been very lucky that we’re able to,” she said. “Being an individual sport helps a little bit, and we all skate with masks and wear masks all the time. We keep our distance and sanitize a lot, so it’s been nice where we can still offer some physical activity and our sport is still doing fairly well.”
