City planning Community Clean Up Day for Earth Day

Mar 30, 2021 | 5:35 PM

The City of North Battleford plans to hold a Community Clean Up Day April 22 to put a bit of a shine on the city after a long winter.

Running from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will coincide with national Earth Day, as part of the city’s efforts to do its part to protect the environment.

Mayor David Gillan is excited about the initiative.

“We’re trying to reach out into the community to speak with our schools especially, of course,” he said. “We’re trying to coordinate not just the city [workers] cleaning up, but other members of the community.”

The city is encouraging businesses and various groups to get involved also.

To sign up to participate, people are asked to register online at the city’s website, call or email the parks and recreation department.

“We provide the bags and the pick up, and that sort of stuff, and we assist the public in being coordinated in it,” Gillan said.

The city will indicate location options, and drop-off points.

Participants are required to follow COVID-19 distancing restrictions, and wear the appropriate masks, gloves, closed-toed shoes, and outdoor wear.

“If you or your organization or school class are interested in volunteering your time to help us clean up… then we really want to hear from you,” parks and recreation director Cheryl DeNeire said at council’s meeting.

Once people register they will receive an information package.

City Manager Randy Patrick said this is a new program for the city to actually have the public involved in clean up day along with staff.

The community event was first proposed during a prior council meeting.
