School granted opportunity to start community garden project

McKitrick Community School students will soon have an opportunity to learn first-hand how to grow fresh produce.

North Battleford city council approved a proposal at its meeting Monday to allow the school to use a nearby vacant lot to create a community garden project.

The land owned by the city is currently for sale but the city is granting the school permission to use it in the interim.

Councillor Kent Lindgren said the garden project is a good way to bring the community together.

City crews will work with the school to prepare the land for the garden on the vacant property on 101 Street near 15th Avenue.

The city will provide access to water, while the school and their partners will be responsible for managing and maintaining the garden once it is established.

Councillor Kelli Hawtin was impressed with the idea, saying it gives kids a chance to understand where food comes from and “how to touch soil and create things.

“I’m just so excited to see the school take a leadership role with this because I don’t think there is a bad lesson that comes from teaching kids how to grow things,” she said.
