Case for accused facing charge in Cindy MacKay death adjourned

A man facing a charge in the death of Cindy MacKay last year had his case adjourned in North Battleford provincial court Friday.

Michael MacKay, 38, is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife Cindy MacKay of the Meota area.

Michael MacKay, who was arrested March 18, 2021, appeared in court by phone.

The case was adjourned to April 9 at 11 a.m. for plea, as the defence counsel is awaiting disclosure from the Crown prosecutor.

Cindy MacKay was in medical distress on Feb. 7, 2020, and transported to hospital. She later died in hospital on Feb. 12, 2020.

The RCMP indicated in their initial release on March 18, 2021 that health-care professionals raised concerns to the detachment following Cindy MacKay’s death, which prompted an investigation. But RCMP clarified on March 19, 2021 that in fact health-care professionals raised concerns while Cindy MacKay was still in hospital, prior to her death, which prompted the investigation.

The allegation against the accused has not been proven in court.
