RCMP warn of counterfeit currency in Northwest Saskatchewan

Mar 9, 2021 | 12:54 PM

Turtleford and Onion Lake RCMP are urging business owners to be vigilant when it comes to cash.

The detachments have received numerous reports from local businesses of counterfeit Canadian currency being circulated in the community. In Canada, it is a criminal offence to knowingly use and recirculate a counterfeit bill.

Many of these bills have identifying marks to indicate they are fake. This includes different material that is easily damaged or ripped, differences in size, shape, and colour, modified bills with tape or other adhesive materials, holographic images and numbers that do not match the bill denomination and displaying black lines or bars.

Anyone who comes into contact with what could be counterfeit currency are asked to report it to the local RCMP detachment by calling 310-RCMP, as well as through Crime Stoppers to maintain anonymity.
