Honouring Our Veterans banner programs accepting applications

Those who would like to recognize family members and loved ones who served the country may wish to apply to the Honouring Our Veterans banner programs running again this year.

The banners will be installed on the main streets in North Battleford and Battleford from mid-October to mid-November during the Remembrance Day period.

This will mark the second year of the program for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 70 in North Battleford. Applications can be submitted until Aug. 31.

President Marilyn Clark said banners will be erected on street lamps along 100 Street.

“We’ll start at the park and go as far as we can,” she said.

The Legion’s committee is accepting 50 applications this year, which would make an additional 25 double-sided banners to complement the 17 installed in 2020.

The City of North Battleford previously agreed to hang and remove the banners on the light standards for the program, along 100 Street from 11 Avenue to about 13 Avenue.

Clark said last year the Fred Light Museum helped the North Battleford Legion to get the program started in this city, but this time the Legion will be able to run it on its own with help from the city.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a banner can pick up an application form at the Legion in North Battleford or by email at rcl.70@sasktel.net.

In the town, the Fred Light Museum, the Royal Canadian Legion Battleford Branch No. 9, and the Town of Battleford are partnering on the banner program again this year.

Banners to recognize the community’s veterans will be installed on light posts on 22nd Street and other areas around Battleford. Registrations are being accepted until the end of August.

“We’re’ taking up to 50 [applications],” Fred Light Museum Manager Bernadette Leslie said. “This is going to be the third year. I am still really thrilled that we are offering it, and people are still wanting to honour their loved ones.”

The banners from this year’s program will hang beside those from last year.

People can apply to sponsor a banner by contacting the Fred Light Museum at (306) 937-7111 or by email at flmuseum@battleford.ca.
