Town pleased with response for tenders for land leases

Mar 5, 2021 | 3:39 PM

The Town of Battleford saw a robust response from the community for the current round of tenders for its agriculture land leases.

The financial gain for the town in revenue from the land leases for the next five years, from 2021 to 2025, works out to about $52,000.

“It’s probably one of the largest volumes of interest in all the land leases I’ve seen in my tenure on council,” Mayor Ames Leslie told battlefordsNOW.

He appreciates the renewed interest from the community.

“Some of the values of the land have been brought forth to more modern levels of what we are seeing across the region, and even the province. It was good to see,” Leslie added.

Council accepted administration’s recommendation for the town to enter into contracts for the proposed land leases received.

Leases are for a five-year period, running from March 1, 2021 to March 1, 2026. The minimum tender amount per parcel of land was set at $150.

Land sizes available ranged roughly from about two acres to 150 acres for the 13 parcels on offer, for a total of approximately 450 acres.

“The RFPs [Request for Proposals] were out there for it, so it was a fair process for everyone,” Coun. Shelley Boutin-Gervais said.

Council approved administration’s recommendation to award specific bids received for eight parcels of land.

No bids came in for the five smaller parcels remaining, sized from about two acres to 18 acres. The town will re-advertise these for potential tender in the future.
