SaskMusic hosting virtual concert for International Women’s Day

Mar 5, 2021 | 1:19 PM

Talent from across Saskatchewan will be showcased during a virtual concert event in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The concert, scheduled for March 7 at 7 p.m., has been organized by SaskMusic and will feature more than 20 artists. It will be streamed on SaskMusic’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, and is meant to introduce the public to more Saskatchewan artists, as well as support female artists in particular.

La Ronge’s Dara Schindelka is participating in the event, along with Battleford’s Gypsy Moonbird and Prince Albert’s Liza Jayne Brown and Allison Rae Strong.

“I’m super proud of our province and the way we come together, whether its TeleMircle or in multiculturalism, and I think that celebrating and lifting up women for International Women’s Day is just another example of how our communities gather to support one another,” Schindelka said.

Schindelka will be singing a traditional maritime folk song called She’s Like The Swallow, which is about a woman alone with her children and not knowing how she’s going to make it work. It’s a powerful song, she said, and she will release it on streaming platforms and her YouTube channel March 12.

Although it is a free event, Schindelka noted the public is encouraged to make a donation to either the Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan or Unison Benevolent Fund.

International Women’s Day, held annually on March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

Others performing in the concert are Andrea An, Cassandra Stinn, Cassidy Lambert, Munro & Patrick, Jordyn Pollard, Justine Sletten, Kateryna Grace, Kylee Carver, Meghan Bowman, MELODNA, Micah Walbaum, Nini Jegz, Raven Reid, Sage Hunter, Rhonda Gallant-Morari, Theresa Sokyrka, Val Halla, velours and Yvonne St. Germaine.
