Five accused in Onion Lake area pursuit to be back in court in March

Feb 23, 2021 | 4:57 PM

Five individuals facing charges related to an Onion Lake Cree Nation (OLCN) area vehicle pursuit in January are scheduled to return to Lloydminster provincial court again next month.

Police previously reported Onion Lake RCMP officers were shot at from an SUV during a vehicle pursuit on Jan. 1, 2021 in the OLCN area.

The North Battleford Provincial General Investigation Section took responsibility of the investigation and charged all five occupants of the black SUV. The RCMP identified the individuals as alleged members of street gangs. Police said the vehicle was travelling on Highway 17 at a high rate of speed. Officers pursued the vehicle while being shot at, as one individual allegedly pointed a long-barreled firearm from one of the SUV windows. The vehicle eventually stopped in front of the new OLCN High School. Shortly after, the individuals were arrested. Several firearms and ammunition were found in the vehicle, according to RCMP.

Twaine Derek Buffalo, 39, Glynnis Larene Chief, 37, Tyler Ryan Wolfe, 35, all from Onion Lake Cree Nation; and Danny Lee Weeseekase, 38, from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, are facing the numerous charges.

These charges are discharge of a firearm with intent to endanger life; assault of a police officer with a weapon; being an occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm; careless use of a firearm; possession of a firearm without a licence; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Wolfe is also facing charges of flight from police and dangerous driving.

Weeseekase is also facing charges of breach recognizance – weapon possession.

Melissa Lee McAlpine, 32, from Lloydminster, is facing charges of assault of a police officer with a weapon; discharge of a firearm with intent to endanger life; and being an occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm.

Four of the accused remain in custody, while McAlpine was previously released on bail.

Chief is scheduled to return to court March 3 to be spoken to. It is expected a trial date for her case will be set at her next appearance, Crown prosecutor Oryn Holm confirmed.

Buffalo and Wolfe will be back in court March 17.

Weeseekase and McAlpine are scheduled to return to court March 3.

The allegations against the five accused individuals have not been proven in court.
