Five-year term

Town of Battleford accepting tenders for land leases

Feb 16, 2021 | 1:13 PM

The Town of Battleford is now accepting sealed tenders for agriculture land leases.

Residents will have until Feb. 19 at 12 p.m. to submit their tenders with the five-year lease period beginning March 1, 2021 and lasting until March 1, 2026.

Community planner with the town, Alex Popoff said that while a standard lease is often times just a year in duration; with much of the available plots being farmland, the longer five-year term is important to allow those using the land to feel they can build on their progress and plan for the future.

“A five-year term allows for the person who gets it and is going to be working the land to actually put together a plan for a few years and not be stuck just year-to-year,” Popoff said.

“Some people do make improvements to the land, whether putting up fencing or cleaning up [various things], and when they only have a one-year lease it’s not really fair. They can put in a lot of work and increase the value themselves only to maybe lose the lease the next year,” he added.

Popoff said the five years gives people enough time that if they do want to put up some fencing or make some small improvements they feel like there’s actual value in doing that.

All residents planning to submit a tender must include a post-dated cheque for March 1st, 2021 in the amount of their bid with their application. All tenders are to be clearly marked “LEASE #” with the corresponding number, and minimum tender per parcel should not be less than $150.00 plus GST. The town has also stated that highest of any tender may not necessarily be accepted.

Residents are asked to drop off their sealed tenders at the town hall, clearly indicating the lease number they are interested in. Below is the map showcasing locations of the leases available for tender, followed by a brief description of each land lot:
