Support for mental health

Olympic medalist Clara Hughes and advocate Mark Henick part of this week’s mental health awareness events

People looking to learn more about mental health and gain some advice on coping may be interested in some events and campaigns planned for this week.

The Canadian Mental Health Association Saskatchewan Division (CMHA) is promoting a live speakers’ engagement session taking place Wednesday, called Finding Our Path to Mental Health, with six-time Olympic medalist Clara Hughes and mental health advocate Mark Henick, starting at 12 p.m. They both have struggled with their own mental health challenges related to depression, and offer hope for the future. The event will be followed by a moderated question and answer period.

The free session is offered via Zoom, with details available on Facebook. Registration is required.

Jane Zielke de Montbrun, executive director of the CMHA Battlefords branch, is looking forward to the event.

“Both Clara Hughes and Mark Henick have been very open about the challenges they have had living with a mental health problem,” she said. “This can be really helpful for other people because they can connect with them. Their sharing then provides hope for people.

“I think if people can engage and listen to both of these speakers it would be a really good experience,” Zielke de Montbrun added.

A long-time advocate of mental health, Hughes was in North Battleford in 2014 as part of her Clara’s Big Ride national bicycle tour for the Bell Let’s Talk campaign to support mental health.

Bell Let’s Talk Day

Also this week, the annual Bell Let’s Talk Day takes place Thursday, Jan. 28, to raise support and awareness for mental health initiatives across Canada.

Bell will donate five cents more towards mental health initiatives each time an individual watches its official video on the various social media platforms including YouTube, tweets or re-tweets using #BellLetsTalk on Twitter, uses the Bell Let’s Talk Facebook frame, uses the Bell Let’s Talk Snapchat filter, and uploads a video using #BellLetsTalk on TikTok. As well, Bell will donate five cents more for the campaign for every text message sent by each Bell wireless customer and every call made by Bell wireless and its home phone customers.
