Living Sky School Division to meet with MLAs to discuss needs, plans ahead

Living Sky School Division plans to meet with area MLAs next month to discuss some of its needs and initiatives it has been involved in.

Six area MLAs have been invited to participate – Premier Scott Moe (MLA for Rosthern-Shellbrook), Jeremy Cockrill (the Battlefords), Ryan Domotor (Cut Knife-Turtleford), Jeremy Harrison (Meadow Lake), Randy Weekes (Biggar-Sask Valley) and Ken Francis (Kindersley).

The meeting will be held online Feb. 17.

“We try to meet with our MLAs once a year – for information sharing and general discussion to try to answer any questions they may have, and to always advocate on behalf of our students,” board chair Ronna Pethick said.

The meeting will focus on four main issues.

“Some of the [items] we want to discuss are of course budget, our advocacy on ongoing sustainable funding for education in our school division,” Pethick said.

The division also hopes to talk about funding needs for mental health support for students.

As well, it plans to discuss the joint-letter signed by four Saskatchewan educational organizations regarding the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out for teachers and school staff.

“It’s a priority in our province so we just want to lend our support on that,” Pethick said.

The letter was sent to the Saskatchewan Ministries of Health and Education and the Saskatchewan Health Authority. It was signed by the Saskatchewan School Boards Association (SSBA); the Saskatchewan League of Educational Administrators, Directors and Superintendents (LEADS); the Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials (SASBO); and the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF). Dated Jan. 13, the letter requests teachers and school staff across the province be considered a priority in the second phase of the COVID-19 vaccine delivery.

In its meeting with the MLAs, Living Sky also plans to present some general information about the school division, considering that two of the MLAs are newly elected to their roles.

Pethick said the board hopes to share some of its students’ and staff successes during the discussion, engage in dialogue, and offer its ideas.

“It just gives us a chance to have that really positive conversation,” she said.
