Battlefords RCMP are investigating a homicide in the RM of North Battleford, which led to Wednesday morning’s highway closure on Highway 378.

Tuesday evening, around 10:30 p.m., RCMP officers joined fire crews and EMS in responding to a structure fire at an abandoned residence, located north of the Highway 687 and 378 junction. This is roughly 30 minutes northeast of North Battleford. Following fire suppression, human remains were located inside the structure.

At this time, the deceased’s identity is unknown and the death is being treated as a homicide investigation. As a result, police presence will increase in the area, with such assistance from groups like Major Crimes Unit North, Forensic Identification Services, Saskatchewan Coroners Service and a fire investigator from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.

In this preliminary stage of the investigation, the RCMP is seeking public assistance. Anyone who observed suspicious activity in the area that evening (especially between 6:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.), or who has other information related to the incident are urged to contact the North Battleford detachment or Crime Stoppers.
