Trial date adjourned for one of accused in Laverdiere homicide case

The trial date has been adjourned for one of the accused in the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation.

Nikita Cook, 32, of Onion Lake Cree Nation, is facing charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. She was to stand trial at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford from Jan. 11 to March 5, 2021. However, following lawyer discussions, her jury trial is now tentatively scheduled for Aug. 30, 2021 to Oct. 1, 2021. She is to have a pre-trial meeting on Jan. 22, 2021.

More dates set

Soaring Eagle Whitstone, Shayla Orthner, Danita Thomas, Jesse Sangster and Nicole Cook are facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Soaring Eagle Whitstone is expected to stand trial next year. Whitstone is tentatively scheduled for a jury trial scheduled for Aug. 29, 2022 to Sept. 30, 2022. Her pre-trial meeting is set for this year on March 12, 2021.

Shayla Orthner is scheduled for a jury trial from April 4 to May 6, 2022.

Danita Thomas is set for a jury trial from Jan. 24 to March 4, 2022.

Jesse Sangster and Nicole Cook are scheduled for pre-trial meetings March 12, 2021. No trial dates have been set yet.

Nicole Cook is the mother of Tristen Cook-Buckle, whose funeral Laverdiere attended on April 27, 2019 on the Thunderchild First Nation, prior to Laverdiere’s disappearance.

Charles St. Savard is facing charges of first degree murder and kidnapping. St. Savard who is in custody is due back in North Battleford provincial court Jan. 11, 2021.

Samuel Takakenew, facing a charge of accessory after the fact to murder, who is released on bail, is scheduled to appear in North Battleford provincial court again on Jan. 15, 2021.

The allegations against the accused individuals have not been proven in court.

Brent Checkosis and Mavis Takakenew were sentenced in May of 2020 after both previously pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder. Checkosis received seven years in prison, while Mavis Takakenew was sentenced to 18 months incarceration.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11, 2019 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16 of that year.
