North Battleford offers free Christmas tree recycling

Christmas has come to an end in the Battlefords and everyone will have to properly dispose of their trees.

The City of North Battleford is recycling Christmas trees as mulch chips again this year and will have two free drop-off locations available. Communications Administrator Dustin MacDonald said this is beneficial for the city, residents and the environment. The mulch is used in tree and shrub beds, retaining moisture and suppressing weed growth. Every park within city limits uses wood chips.

“It’s a great resource for us and we’re ensuring that it’s being used in an environmentally conscious way as well,” MacDonald said.

Prior to dropping off trees, all residents must first ensure all decorative items are removed from every portion of the branches and base. These include all lights, string, wire, ornaments, tinsel and fake snow.

“They can cause quite a bit of damage to city equipment and if it gets mixed into the mulch, it degrades its usefulness,” MacDonald said.

The first free drop-off location is the City of North Battleford Parks Shop on Eighth Avenue, open during regular business hours Monday to Friday. This will be available until January 15. Residents can also drop off Christmas trees at the Waste Management Facility without fees until January 22, after which regular fees will apply.

“People will have an opportunity to drop off their trees for free, if they are taking part in Ukrainian Christmas,” MacDonald said.

A tool residents can use as a reminder to recycle is an app called Recycle Coach. It’s available for download and on multiple devices.

“Whether it’s trash or recycling, they can set up reminder so they don’t miss their waste pick-up day, which can be tricky sometimes with statutory holidays,” MacDonald said.

Further information on Christmas tree drop-off is available on the city’s website.
