Merry Christmas Meota video sends message of resilience during COVID-19

Dec 21, 2020 | 6:30 PM

A long-time Meota resident and his son have created a Christmas video inspired by the people who make up the picturesque village, north of the Battlefords.

Charles Baillargeon spent about 10 days filming Merry Christmas Meota while his son Colin edited it.

Charles said Meota, like every other community, is hunkered down and feeling the impact from isolation and social distancing due to the pandemic. So he hopes the video offers a glimpse of optimism.

“Rather than to allow COVID to totally rule our lives, I thought let’s just show that Meota has spirit,” he said. “We are kind of fighting back in a unique sense where we still get outside, we still speak to our friends off the street or the sidewalk. [The project] allowed us to create something that just showed the spirit of our little village.”

Charles managed to capture video of people at home, at work and out and about. He also filmed some parts of the project on the spur of the moment.

The video has garnered close to 1,300 views already.

Baillargeon’s son Colin edited the video that features residents sending their best wishes during the holidays.

Colin was glad to be able to contribute his technical skills to help the project come together.

He said he hopes the initiative helps “put a smile on somebody’s face,” and gets people involved in the community.

“Bringing a sense of community to anywhere right now is especially important, without being able to be in direct contact with anybody,” he said. “I thought it was a nice gesture on my dad’s part, and I was happy to help.”
