Town of Battleford extends finance supervisor’s contract

Dec 17, 2020 | 3:12 PM

Battleford’s finances remain in capable hands while town officials look for David Gillan’s replacement.

Finance Supervisor Gayle Adams had her contract extended for 18 months at council earlier this week. The move is designed to allow administration some flexibility in its search for a new finance director. Gillan served in that capacity since 2018, but resigned from the position ahead of the city’s mayoral race this fall, where he defeated incumbent Ryan Bater to become mayor of North Battleford.

Prior to joining the Town of Battleford on a contract basis, Adams spent many years as the city assessor for North Battleford, before retiring in 2015. Adams said she still enjoys working for the town and will be happy to continue to do so as the search continues.

“I only do three days a week so, I came semi-out of retirement,” she said. “I’m ready to stay on a little longer.”

In her role, Adams said she does some of the director’s work, while running the main floor of the office and overseeing items like payroll, payables, and utilities.

“Help out with the cashiers, train the staff where they need training, so I oversee all of those types of functions,” she said.

Mayor Ames Leslie said it was an important move for the town moving forward to keep Adams in her current role. She brings more than 30 years of experience, as well as understanding of relevant software.

“Council looked at the value of that and we’ll keep her on until that time,” Leslie said. “This gives them the ability to not rush out and find somebody and find the right fit for the team.”

With a number of challenges ahead for Saskatchewan communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, making sure the right people handle finances is a priority for the town. Leslie said Adams has been doing a great job and will continue to do so.

“It was good timing to still have her around and we’ll definitely take in the benefit of her abilities and knowledge,” he said.
