Accused says he was hearing voices in Cochin-area homicide case

Dec 17, 2020 | 6:40 PM

When the accused, Joshua Roy Tucker, took the stand at Queen’s Bench court in Battleford Thursday, he said he was hearing voices the day his father, Gordon Tucker, was fatally shot.

Joshua said he believed it was an imposter, not the real person he pointed his gun at when he shot at Gordon.

Joshua Tucker previously pleaded not guilty to the charge of second degree murder in the death of Gordon Tucker, who was found deceased May 31, 2018, at his farm property southeast of Cochin.

The defence counsel questioned Joshua about his mental state prior to Gordon Tucker’s death.

Joshua told the court he had delusions and heard threatening voices before and during the incident.

He said the voices wanted to harm him and his family.

On May 30, 2018, the day Gordon Tucker was fatally shot, Joshua said Gordon was watching TV in the day-time which Joshua thought out of character for Gordon as he usually spent his time working on the farm. Joshua said he thought it was a double he was looking at, not the real Gordon, as part of a conspiracy.

Joshua said he grabbed his gun and pointed it at Gordon.

“I thought he was an imposter,” Joshua said. “I fired at him, and hit him in the back.”

Joshua said after Gordon was fatally shot, he heard voices telling him to “clean up and shut up,” which he did.

The Crown prosecutor questioned how Joshua had the mental wherewithal to methodically clean the blood from the scene and move the body to another location on the farm where it wouldn’t be visible if he was having delusions.

Later when describing his experience that day Joshua said he “‘fluctuated between delusion and reality.”

Joshua Tucker’s trial continues Friday.
