Accused facing accessory charge in Laverdiere homicide investigation to be released on bail

Dec 11, 2020 | 5:18 PM

One of the accused individuals facing a charge related to the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation was granted bail.

Samuel Takakenew, 36, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

He appeared via phone at a bail hearing at Queen’s Bench Court in Battleford Friday.

The Crown Prosecutor and Defence counsel, also appearing by phone respectively, both consented to Takakenew’s release.

Justice Gerald Allbright authorized Takakenew’s release on bail with a number of strict conditions.

“I take it very seriously when the Crown and the Defence join in suggesting that a release should occur and that it is appropriate for that release to occur,” he said.

A publication ban is in place on the details of the hearing.

The judge made what is known as an adult release order.

Takakenew is to be released on a $1,000 deposit and must comply with the following conditions: appear before the court when required, keep the peace, report to his probation officer, reside at a specified residence, abide by a curfew to remain in the residence 24 hours a day, essentially under house arrest, unless he has a prior provision under a probation officer, a designate or the court to be elsewhere.

He must comply with curfew checks. He must abstain from alcohol, and drugs not prescribed for him by a medical doctor, and must not enter any place in which the main purpose is the sale of alcohol, such as bars or liquor stores.

Takakenew must abide by a no-contact order for several individuals, except through a lawyer. These individuals’ names are protected by the publication ban in place. He was ordered also not to contact any of them on social media as well or attend their residence or place of work.

He is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition or other weapons, crossbows, and other prohibited weapons.

Takakenew agreed to comply with all the conditions.

He is next scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Jan. 15, 2021, at 10 a.m.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Her remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford July 11, 2019, and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman July 16, 2019.

The allegations against the accused individual have not been proven in court.
