Battlefords RCMP traffic stop yields significant drugs seizure

Dec 10, 2020 | 2:57 PM

Battlefords RCMP seized more than 15 kilograms of illicit drugs during a traffic stop on Monday.

Around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, a resident reported an erratic driver to the detachment. Officers located the SUV and initiated a traffic stop just west of Battleford on Highway 16, where a lone adult male was arrested without incident. Insp. Tom Beck applauded the diligence of both the officers and the public.

“A police officer never knows what circumstances they might encounter when conducting a traffic stop, you never know who or what will be inside that vehicle,” he added.

During the vehicle search, several drugs were located, including 15 kg of suspected methamphetamine, which is roughly 150,000 individual doses. There was also 1 kg of suspected cocaine, small amounts of suspected fentanyl and cash. The cocaine could be around 1,000 individual doses. Around 1 kg of an unidentified substance is being tested.

Beck said this is a very large quantity of drugs to take off the street, not only because of their direct effects but because they are often laced with other substances that “can result in tragedy.”

“One of the things we can do to prevent these tragedies and other ripple effects from occurring is to stem the flow of these substances before they trickle into our Saskatchewan communities and beyond,” Beck said. “The seizure of this quantity of methamphetamine will certainly have a significant, resounding impact.”

As a result of the overall investigation, 36-year-old Lowen Diehl from the Penhold/Edmonton areas of Alberta faces multiple charges. These include possession of methamphetamine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of fentanyl, possession of proceeds of crime under $5000, and two counts of breach of a release order. He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court Wednesday morning and his next appearance is on December 16 at 11:00 a.m.
