RCMP end manhunt following highway pursuit

Battlefords RCMP arrested Jonathan Swiftwolfe, after a coordinated effort with multiple police units over the weekend.

On December 4, local RCMP, the North Battleford Gang Task Force and Municipal General Investigation Section, the Saskatchewan RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) as well as other special units, developed a coordinated plan to safely locate and arrest the 26-year-old. Swiftwolfe evaded police since April after breaching his probation conditions.

On Saturday and Sunday, local officers and the Saskatchewan CRT found Swiftwolfe driving a stolen vehicle with a female passenger on Highway 40, near Sweet Grass First Nation. A pursuit occurred after the vehicle refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. The chase ended with a spike belt which stopped the suspect vehicle at the Table Mountain turnoff east of Sweet Grass First Nation.

Swiftwolfe and the female occupant were arrested without incident, while police searched the vehicle and seized a loaded gun within reaching distance of the driver. The female was identified as 24-year-old Cassandra Fox, wanted on numerous warrants, including assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a release order.

Cpl. Tyler Zrymiak, from the North Battleford RCMP CRT, participated in the coordinated operation. He credited the ability of Saskatchewan RCMP CRT in deploying resources.

“To do what it takes to take them into custody, is a unique feature of our team,” he said. “To drop everything to pursue somebody, we can do that. And that’s what we did to locate Jonathan Swiftwolfe.”

Zrymiak also said the teamwork of all RCMP groups was critical in the operation ending safely.

“Collaboration between units and communities is greatly responsible for our success,” he said. “We are very proud our community and our neighbours are now safer because of it.”

Jonathan Swiftwolfe now faces more than 35 Criminal Code charges from his arrest Sunday night, as well as previous warrants and outstanding charges. Both Swiftwolfe and Fox are currently in custody at the North Battleford RCMP detachment, where they will remain until they appear at provincial court on December 8.
