Despite the pandemic, North West College students have received $115,000 in scholarships in 2019/2020

North West College students awarded more than $115,000

Students at North West College are finding streams of financial relief in the form of scholarships while they continue to progress through their post-secondary programs.

Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, students at both North West College campuses have collectively earned more than $115,000 in scholarship money. In November alone, over $70,000 was awarded to students through 150 entrance scholarships.

Jay Notay, President and CEO of North West College, said the effort from students in their pursuit of higher education has been impressive as they have faced many challenges this year with the current public health concerns.

“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of our students who work hard through these times,” Notay said.

“They’re able to tough it through and still focus on their education among all of the other things that come their way, and this is going to do nothing else but prepare them for when they leave post-secondary and start working on their career. If they can get through this, I feel they can get through anything.”

While the news of the scholarships comes as a positive, Notay mentioned there were some concerns with how the academic awards were going to be approached this year. However, he said complications with the economic climate proved to be nothing more than a minor inconvenience in this specific situation.

North West College received donations from a number of individual and corporate donors that was matched dollar-for-dollar by the provincial government through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarships program.

“Each scholarship donation is an investment in North West College, our students and our communities within northwest Saskatchewan,” Notay said. “Their support is an ongoing beacon of encouragement for myself and our students, who through the support of these scholarships are able to achieve success in their educational and desired career paths.”

North West College is expecting the total number of money awarded to rise to $130,000 by the end of the academic year.

· Rotary Club of the Battlefords Scholarship $1,000: Hannah-Ashley Lapawchuk, Psychiatric Nursing Program
