Battlefords Humane Society gifting needy pets with Christmas hampers

Dec 2, 2020 | 11:40 AM

The Battlefords Humane Society is helping needy families and individuals this holiday season by giving away free gift hampers for their pets.

People need to submit a request to the organization to be considered for a hamper.

Shelter Coordinator Michelle Spark said the society hopes to share some of the joy of the season during a difficult time for many people.

“COVID has hit everybody pretty hard this year, and our community has always been so supportive of us that we wanted to be able to give back,” she said.

The hampers will contain some pet food, treats, toys and possibly a cat bed or dog bed.

Spark thanked all the organizations helping make the initiative possible.

The Battlefords Humane Society is partnering on the project with the Saskatchewan SPCA, Discovery Co-op, Horizon Pet Food, Pet Valu and No Frills.

“We’re hoping to be able to give out around 40 to 50 hampers,” Spark said.

“If you or someone you know is in need of a pet hamper this Christmas, send us a letter telling us why,” she added.

Letters should be sent via email to bhsdonations2019@gmail.com or by fax 306-446-2704 by Dec. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

Spark said people can also donate to the pet hamper project if they are interested.

For another initiative the Battlefords Humane Society staff are selling facemasks for a fundraiser for the organization. Masks, many with pet-inspired designs, are being sold for $5 or $10 each, depending on the item.

Also in the works, the organization is creating 2021 calendars featuring pictures of adopted pets that were submitted by families. The cost of the calendars is still to be determined. Funds raised will benefit the organization.

Spark said the society decided to offer calendars since it was not able to have its pets with Santa photo fundraiser this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

She said the humane society staff still wanted to do something for the holidays, so the calendar seemed like a fun idea.

‘We did get quite a few submissions,” Spark said. “We are in the process of putting the calendars together.”
