Budget 2021

City 2021 budget deliberation meetings to be held via Zoom this year

Nov 30, 2020 | 4:49 PM

The City of North Battleford is holding its 2021 budget deliberation meetings online this year, due to the province’s COVID-19 precautions.

Any individuals interested in attending the upcoming Dec. 3 meeting’s public forum will first need to register with the city clerk by Wednesday at 4 p.m. More information is available on the city’s website.

Mayor David Gillan said members of council will take part virtually as well.

“It’s all about safety,” he said. “We want to make sure the public is safe, councillors are safe, managers are safe, media are safe. And, the best way to do that now is through Zoom.”

While the city used the Chapel Gallery as the site for its recent council meeting, with restricted capacity and part of attendees participating online, Gillan said it is more feasible to hold deliberation sessions virtually instead.

“We didn’t have the right equipment for Chapel [Gallery] yet,” he said. “It wasn’t ideal at the last meeting. And, with the pandemic getting worse, we thought it is just easier to go to Zoom.”

The Dec. 3 meeting, starting at 5:30 p.m., will include a general overview of the proposed budget, and a public forum. After that, presentations are anticipated from the Empty Stocking Fund, North Battleford Public Transit, the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Battlefords, Concern for Youth, Midwest Food Resources, North Battleford Golf and Country Club, Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, and The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords.

The Dec. 7 deliberation session, starting at 6 p.m., will look at the city’s general government services, police services, fire and protective services, and planning and development services.

For the Dec. 9, meeting, again beginning at 6 p.m., deliberations will focus on the city’s leisure services, and its public works services – operations, waste management, water and sanitary sewer.
