Hot Start Early

U18 NorthWest Stars off to sizzling start this season

Nov 23, 2020 | 5:11 PM

The U18 AA NorthWest Stars have had an electric start to the hockey season.

Following back-to-back victories over the Saskatoon Sabercats over the weekend, the team is now 4-0 to start the year; thanks to some timely scoring and determination throughout the early going.

Following a 4-2 win over the Sabercats Saturday night in Saskatoon, the Stars showed good resiliency in Sunday’s 5-3 win, back at the Civic Centre in North Battleford.

The team was down 3-0 in the third period of Sunday’s game, before ultimately scoring five-unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes, to snatch victory from the hands of defeat.

Head coach of the U18s, Lee Ulmer said it was great to see the resiliency of the players pay off through hard work.

“We just kept plugging away and guys just got some confidence, and we were able to come out on the right side of that one,” Ulmer said. “When you have success, everyone gets some confidence, and confidence is a big thing in hockey.”

Forwards Matthew Dament and Lee Burt lead the Stars with five goals apiece, while a total of 13 players on the roster have chipped in with at least a single tally through the team’s opening four games.

Ulmer said while the hot start to the season is certainly nice to see, the team knows their work is only just getting started. He said they must continue to use their speed and work hard to see continued success moving forward.

“We just want to keep getting better,” Ulmer said. “The goal isn’t [just] to be the best team in November, it’s to be the best team in March. So we’re just going to continue to prepare for every practice and every game, to go out there and do our best and we’ll get to where we want to be.”

The U18 AA NorthWest Stars will return to action this weekend, with back-to-backs versus the Warman Wildcats. Saturday’s game will be played at the Legends Centre in Warman, while Sunday’s contest will be back at the Civic Centre, with puck drop at 5 p.m.
