Town renews agreement with Sharks for Battleford arena advertising

Nov 19, 2020 | 5:05 PM

The town is continuing its agreement with the Battlefords AAA Sharks female hockey team for advertising in the Battleford arena.

Council voted in favour of renewing the contract at its recent meeting.

Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie said generally the agreement is completed before the arena season starts up.

“Just due to COVID restrictions, and uncertainty whether or not the rink [season] was going to go forward, the agreement wasn’t put in front of council until now,” he said.

In the arrangement, the Sharks sell commercial advertising on the arena boards as a fundraiser, and the profits are divided 50/50 between the town and team.

There are 46 advertising spots available at the arena at a cost of $350 each.

Through the agreement, the AAA Sharks are responsible for all administrative duties associated with selling the advertising, and the town maintains and replaces the ads, according to town parks and recreation director Jordan Schechtel’s report.

The contract will be in effect for the 2020 to 2021 arena season.

“It’s a great agreement,” Mayor Leslie said. “The triple-A Sharks have been a great partner for the town. Hopefully, we can keep the rink going so they can fill the advertisements.”
