Unofficial results in for Meadow Lake, Cut Knife, Lloydminster

Nov 9, 2020 | 11:54 PM

Meadow Lake’s numbers are in for the 2020 municipal election, but residents will have to wait until the morning for it to become official.

The city released the unofficial results late Monday evening, where all four incumbent candidates fared well. Conrad Read was the lead vote getter at 506 votes well ahead of the field. Fellow members looking for re-election, Ron Dishko, Richard Levesque and Tom Harrison finished with 409, 405 and 398 respectively.

The two newcomers potentially joining council are Clay DeBray and Mauri Young. DeBray had the next most successful evening, with 468 votes.

Young meanwhile, finished with 320 ballots, just five ahead of runner up Kassidy Dunsing. As a result, the official results will not come in until Tuesday morning.

“Just to confirm all the numbers,” Mayor Merlin Seymour said. “It looks very close between number six and number seven.”

Seymour said he’s excited to work with a new council, in part for continuing to work with the re-elected members once again. He said having continuity should help get things started when they return to business as usual this month.

“The two new people that will be there are going to be welcome as well,” he said.

The remainder of candidate voting totals were filled out by Shawn Brander (269), Felicia Adams (254), Amber Ambroziak (247) and Sebastien Dupuis (179). Seymour said it was great to see the civic engagement from the participants.

“To everyone that put their name forward, much appreciated,” he said. “Thanks for doing that and showing the interest in our community.”

The official results are expected around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Gwenn Kaye re-elected as mayor of Cut Knife

In the Town of Cut Knife, the results are in, where Mayor Gwenn Kaye will continue her role at the head of council.

Kaye took in 122 votes, exactly double the total of challenger Doug Sperling. Sperling had served for the past six years as a town councillor.

The council race resulted in more individual votes, with Lyle Cronk being re-elected with 142 votes, followed by newcomer Sandra Feser at 137. The remaining councillors voted in were incumbents Douglas Robertson (132), Jason Lloyd (125) and Fred Roschker (124), along with Lloyd Weeseekase. Robert Keys was the odd candidate out with 97 votes.

Cut Knife’s next council meeting will take place Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

Lloydminster council retains incumbents

With Mayor Gerald Aalbers acclaiming his position in Lloydminster, residents were focused on electing the six council seats for the Border City.

All four incumbent candidates were elected to city council, along with two additions familiar to most in the area.

Jason Whiting served one term on council before running for mayor in 2016, where he lost to Aalbers. Lorelee Marin works for Alberta Health Services and is heavily involved with youth and addictions services in the city.

Jonathan Torresen had the most support of the field, with 1,804 votes, 11.5 per cent of the total submissions. Aaron Buckingham was second with 1,755, Michael Diachuk third with 1,594, Glenn Fagnan fourth at 1,556, Marin fifth with 1,443 and Whiting was sixth with 1,395 votes.
