Storm reported to have dumped up around 30 centimetres of snow on the Battlefords area

The storm that wallopped the region on the weekend left roughly between 25 to 30 centimetres of snow in total in the Battlefords and surrounding area.

Meteorologist Terri Lang with Environment and Climate Change Canada said a report from Wilkie indicated about 25 centimetres fell there. But she added blowing snow can make it difficult to obtain an accurate tally.

The historical record for North Battleford for an extreme daily snowfall for November is 15.2 centimetres set on Nov. 17, 1946.

The weekend’s nasty weather made it tough for drivers, with strong winds coming from the east and north-east.

“The highest wind speed was probably around 60 kilometres per hour,” Lang said. “But it was that sustained sort of 40 kilometres per hour [wind] that was causing so much of the blowing and drifting snow.”

Lang is reminding people to be especially careful on the roads today until they are cleared.

“This was quite a wide-spread snowstorm,” she said. “It affected much of southern and central Saskatchewan. The road conditions are still not in good shape.”

Drivers should check the Highway Hotline before venturing out to be safe, if they plan to travel.

Looking ahead, Lang said it is expected there will be another weather system moving through the area Wednesday, bringing another two to five centimetres of snow.

The weather will be more on the cold side, and then start to warm up later in the week.
