Living Sky seeing several board member retirements; elections planned

Oct 30, 2020 | 12:30 PM

Living Sky School Division will see five of its current board members retiring from their roles this year, leading up to its board of education elections.

Among the current board members retiring is Ron Kowalchuk (Hafford, Maymont).

“Ron has been a board member for many years,” Director of Education Brenda Vickers said.

On his decision to now retire, she said, she was “surprised, and yet not.”

“Certainly he deserves some time. But we’ll sure miss him. He was very dedicated and served on boards for over 30 years,” she said.

Also retiring from the school board are: Garth Link and Glenn Wouters (both North Battleford), Todd Miller (Cando, Scott Colony and Wilkie), and Tracie Heintz (Kerrobert, Lakeview and Luseland).

Vickers thanked them all for their service.

“It’s hard, I’l miss them. You get to be a team,” she said.

After the elections the new board members will go through an orientation process when they take on their new roles.

Elections will be held for two new board member positions. Peter Frey, Nicole Kobelsky and E. Jon Sloan are competing for the position in Subdivision #3 in Cando, Scott Colony and Wilkie area. While Mary Linnell and Jean Brehon are vying for the seat in Subdivision #2 in the Hafford and Maymont area.

Polls are located in Wilkie, RM of Battle River #438, Maymont, Radisson and Hafford.

The remaining eight seats were filled by acclamation as follows: Ken Arsenault for Subdivision No. 1, Leoville, Medstead, and Spiritwood; Ronna Pethick for Subdivision No. 4, Cut Knife, Hillsvale, and Unity; Kim Gartner for Subdivision No. 5, Macklin; Bernadette Heintz for Subdivision No. 6, Kerrobert, Lakeview and Luseland; Shaun Weber, Richard Hiebert and Rocky Omelchenko for the North Battleford subdivision; and Glen Leask for the Battleford subdivision.

The school board elections will be held Nov. 9.
