Premier Scott Moe discusses Saskatchewan’s future after re-election

Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe addressed the media to share his views about Saskatchewan’s future a day after his re-election. This is Moe’s first time being elected premier of Saskatchewan, and the fourth Sask. Party government in a row.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Moe kept his initial opening remarks brief and thanked the Saskatchewan public who took the time to vote, whether for the Sask. Party or someone else. Moe said he will be back to work right away, meeting with caucus to put together a new cabinet, and plan a fall legislature session.

Government for everyone

One of the topics the re-elected premier spoke on was the Sask. Party’s upcoming objectives and being a government for everyone in Saskatchewan.

“You’ll see those objectives we may share [with the Buffalo Party] in the coming weeks as we have conversations with the caucus,” Moe said.

“Last night I spoke to all people, who may or may not support our party. I informed them this will be a government that will represent everyone in Saskatchewan. We for sure are going to make every effort to be a government for all people in the province and that includes on all parts of the political spectrum.”

Saskatchewan’s future

Moe told reporters there will be opportunities over the next few months to use some of the resources Saskatchewan produces to rebuild the province’s economy.

“We believe Saskatchewan’s best days are ahead of us,” Moe said. “Saskatchewan has an opportunity as we find our way through this pandemic and as the world does start to economically recover at some point, Saskatchewan most certainly has the products the world is going to need to recover.”

Moe cited food, fuel, and fertilizer as examples the world could use. He said the products from Saskatchewan are of high quality, affordable, and some of the most sustainable products in the world.

“As the world looks at their supply chains, they should look at Saskatchewan to source their energy through oil, potash, agri-food products, manufactured good, and mine products,” Moe added. “Saskatchewan is poised to do very well as the global recovery starts at some point in the future.”

Saying no to separation

During the press conference Moe also shut-down any idea of a future separation from Canada, saying it would go against all of Saskatchewan’s goals.

“I don’t support Saskatchewan separating from the nation of Canada, most certainly not,” Moe said. “We hope to continue to have a strong vibrant economy here in Saskatchewan that is providing opportunities for us, to not only have careers in our communities but to attract people to live here.

Moe added separating from the nation of Canada would not help achieve challenges currently faced.

“Saskatchewan separating from Canada does nothing to help us build a pipeline across the nation,” Moe explained. “Separation does not achieve what a lot people think it might set out to achieve.”

Moe finished his statement by saying he believes there are other initiatives for Saskatchewan to expand the province’s economy and independence, but separation is not one of those.
