Town council candidate hopes to play role in community’s growth

For local Rick Zarowny, the town of Battleford has always stood out as a special place.

Growing up just across the bridge, in North Battleford, Zarowny graduated from Saint Thomas College before leaving the community to enroll in the Telecommunications Technology course at NAIT in Edmonton.

That path led to a nearly 40-year career within the Satellite Communication Industry, in nearby Saskatoon.

Prior to retirement, Zarowny moved to the small town of Osler, SK., with his family, where he received his first taste of municipal politics. There he served as an elected member of town council, before ultimately returning to the Battlefords in 2017, to move closer to family.

Zarowny said upon moving back to the community, he and his wife were quick to embrace their surroundings wholeheartedly.

“When we came back here, we really fell in love with Battleford and this community,” he said. “We realized how much we loved it. [I’m running for town council] because the pride I have in the community here. It is beautiful, and I feel really good here, so I hope to help contribute to the continued progress of the community.”

Zarowny said, should he be elected, he looks forward to ensuring the growth of Battleford continues with fiscal responsibility in mind, “so both residents and businesses have a comfortable place to call home.”

He said the community has all the ingredients necessary to attract visitors and future business, with a great location, beautiful scenery, a tight-knit community atmosphere, and a historic past.

“Battleford has the privilege of being situated in some of the most scenic landscape in Saskatchewan,” he said. “With its rich history added to the equation, we’re in a great position to promote these qualities to attract visitors and help local business.”

Zarowny said he would be excited to investigate ways to provide effective incentives to fill empty lots in the town, making them available for new businesses that cater to both residents and visitors within the historic nature of the town.
