Budget proposal

City proposing zero per cent tax increase for operations, one per cent for capital for next budget

Oct 23, 2020 | 3:03 PM

The City of North Battleford’s administration will be proposing a zero per cent property tax increase for operations, and a potential one per cent property tax increase for the city’s capital projects for the new budget for the year ahead.

The recommendation will be presented during the first regular meeting of the new council in November. The next council will consider the proposal when budget deliberations start later this fall.

“That is for the next council to decide,” City Manager Randy Patrick said.

The city discussed the proposal at council’s recent meeting.

Mayor Ryan Bater said a zero per cent property tax increase to fund operations is what council asked administration to aim for, in light of the financial impact to the community from the pandemic this year.

“That will come to council for budget deliberations. But it will ultimately be up to that council, the next council, to make that decision,” Bater said.

The proposed one per cent tax increase for capital recommended by administration will benefit the city’s capital reserve fund, to help support future infrastructure work.

Again, Patrick said it will be up to the new council to decide on.

“There is no guarantee of one per cent,” Patrick said. “That is our goal for the next council.”
