Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe promises more support for businesses if re-elected

Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe celebrated the start of Small Business Week today with a special launch outside Battleford Furniture.

Moe said businesses are resilient, and play an important role.

“They are active in every sector of the economy, every sector of our communities,” he said.

Moe said if the Saskatchewan Party government is re-elected it promises additional support to help small businesses in the province, as part of the COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

The proposal indicates the small business tax rate in the province for the next three years would be reduced, saving small businesses nearly $190 million, or an average $6,100 per business. As well, the offer includes a 10 per cent reduction in power bills for one year for everyone in Saskatchewan, including small businesses. The lower power bills will result in $260 million in savings that will be reinvested in the economy and help spur the recovery effort. Furthermore, the proposal includes a new home renovation tax credit that will save homeowners up to $2,100 on the cost of home renovations, and create new jobs in the construction industry.

Moe also took the opportunity during his local visit to thank Battleford Furniture owner Chris Odishaw for hosting the launch of small business week. He commended him for helping the local economy, and also for his service as a former mayor of Battleford a number of years ago.

“For what you and your business gives back to the community over the years it’s appreciated,” Moe said. “I think it’s indicative of what small businesses do across the province. Small business is big business [in Saskatchewan],” he said.

Moe said 8,700 more jobs were created in September, and today Saskatchewan has the lowest unemployment rate in the country.

Speaking to the media, Odishaw said it’s an honour to have Moe launch small business week in the Battlefords and Saskatchewan.

“It’s great to see our government supporting that idea that small businesses do make a difference in our community,” he said. “We generate a lot of tax dollars, we generate jobs, we donate back to our communities. It’s great when that is recognized.”

He said the COVID-19 situation has had a significant impact on all businesses.

“I call it the new abnormal,” Odishaw said. “Nothing is the same as it used to be.”

He said inventory can be difficult to access which has been challenging, “but we’ll get through it like everybody else.”

Odishaw said it’s good to see the Sask. Party’s pledge for new incentives to help businesses as well as residents.

“I love the idea of supporting businesses, because I think businesses will contribute back to communities,” he said.
