For the last six years, Herb Sutton has worked for the City of North Battleford as the Community Safety Coordinator.

This week, following his final council meeting, Sutton was recognized for his contributions to the community, being named the recipient of the 2020 Fraser-Gatrell Memorial Award.

The Award is presented each year by the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute (SPPI), to a person in the community who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of planning. Recipients vary on a yearly basis from politicians to journalists, to civil servants or others helping to enhance the planning profession.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater said he is happy to see Sutton’s hard work celebrated.

“The recognition of Herb for this award is very well-warranted,” he said. “I’m glad they have chosen to award this to him and I’m very proud of our community and of Herb’s work to be recognized like this.”

Bater said the city is grateful for Sutton’s contributions to various initiatives, including Citizens on Patrol, the CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) Committee, and Crime Free Multi-Housing.

“Herb has had a mark on all of these initiatives and they are all really important,” Bater said. “There are rare opportunities in life when there is a role to fill within an organization or within a community and we are able to find the perfect person to fit within that role. That is certainly the case with Herb Sutton. He has really make it his own and done some great things.”

Among the number of additional initiatives and projects lead by Sutton over the last six years, are North Battleford’s Eyes that Care Program, City-wide Safety Perception Survey, Battlefords Regional Community Coalition, among others.

Sutton’s final council meeting was Tuesday, at which he was given a special send-off as a thank-you for his years of service to the community.
