Two North Battleford councillors not seeking re-election bid adieu to council

Oct 15, 2020 | 5:05 PM

It was a night of goodbyes at North Battleford council’s meeting this week — the last regular meeting of the current term.

Both councillors Don Buglas who has served for the past 17 years, and Kevin Steinborn who has been with council the last four years will not be seeking re-election.

Buglas told council it has been an honour to participate in the current as well as many past councils.

“Serving your community, it’s a lot of work but it’s rewarding,” he said. “I know some people look at all of us sitting in these seats and making these decisions, and wonder why we do it. But it is for the betterment of our community — to make sure we are living in a community that is beyond liveable. It is a successful, enjoyable place to live with your neighbours.”

Buglas said municipal government is often described as being the closest to the people, in ensuring the community’s needs are met.

“I’ve really appreciated working with you,” he said to fellow council members. He also thanked administration and city staff for their support.

For his part, Steinborn thanked everyone who has been involved in the decision-making process with him over the past term.

“It was a tough four years but, you know what, I think we made some positive changes,” he said. “With this council I’ll say I am very proud to have worked beside each and every one of you.”

Steinborn said council had to make some challenging decisions but it pushed forward to get things done.

“We listened to the people of the community, and I think we did the best job we could,” he said.

Before serving on council, Steinborn dedicated 30 years with the North Battleford Fire Department.

Mayor Ryan Bater took the opportunity during the meeting to commend both Buglas and Steinborn for their efforts on council.

He smiled as he first picked up Buglas’ name-plate, saying it has been there for so long it was difficult to budge from council’s table.

Bater thanked Buglas for offering advice when Bater first started as a new councillor in 2012, before later becoming mayor in 2016.

He also said thank you to Steinborn for his contributions and for bringing his perspective to council’s discussions during the past four years.
