Town council candidate brings business experience to campaign

For local David George, the Battleford community has, and always will, hold a special place in his heart.

Born and raised across the bridge in North Battleford, Battleford where he set down roots and where he’s lived and worked for nearly 40 years. It’s where he met his wife Janet and raised their two children and it remains home base today for him and his extended family.

“We’re a Battleford group,” George said.

That loyalty to the community is what initially got George into municipal politics in the first place, back in the late 1980s. Having served 16 years since then as a member of town council, he said the timing just felt right to get back involved.

“We really have a great community here,” he said. “We have great water. We have great recreational facilities, and a great volunteer fire department. We have a lot of good things in our community thankfully, [and now] just hopefully we manage it properly.”

George brings hands-on experience to the fold with his town council bid.

He holds 38 years’ experience working for I.G. Wealth Management in town, as a member of the business community. That experience is something he believes can be a real asset to council, especially as it pertains to keep the economy thriving with the proper financial outlook.

“I’ve been in the finance business here for 38 years, so I know the business side of things,” he said. “I know that if you don’t go to work, you don’t make any money; and if you’re not making any money you’re not spending. We have to make sure people have good jobs, security and all the rest of it. That’s really important.”

George said in addition to an increased focus on taxes and spending concerns, he hopes to also make a difference when it comes to other fundamental factors that affect all in the community.

Among the other key points in his campaign are working toward making the town a safe place for all, building strong infrastructure, and relying on the expertise of locals when implementing that infrastructure.

“We don’t use enough of our people’s expertise, the people in our community,” he said. “When we’re building new infrastructure, I think we need to ask the people who are in our rink, [for example], for their input. Same thing with the water system and same with the roads. I just think we should use that expertise from the people in our community that deal with that stuff every day.”

He said putting more of an emphasis on community voices to weigh in on important projects, can only bode well to ensuring Battleford remains a desirable place to live for years to come.
