City council candidate Plews aims to make a difference

George Plews is among the hopefuls vying for a seat on city council in North Battleford in the upcoming election.

“I have lived in North Battleford for 30 years,” he said. “I just want to do my part; I care about this city.”

Plews, who has a family here, is currently employed as a letter carrier for Canada Post. Before that, for 35 years he was a flight services specialist, otherwise known as a radio operator, at an airport. For a number of years he lived in North Battleford while commuting to work in Lloydminster and Saskatoon.

Plews believes the current council is doing a good job, and wants to continue the trend.

He said for the most part property taxes in North Battleford are fair for the services available, and lower than in a number of other Saskatchewan cities.

He would like to see a cap on the recreation capital facilities’ levy though.

As far as local traffic is concerned, Plews said he would like to have some signage implemented to control traffic at two intersections he sees as challenging, to improve safety and traffic flow.

Raising North Battleford’s public profile as a good place to live and visit is one of his goals.

Plews said between the river valley attraction and the Credit Union CUplex, the community has a lot to offer.

“If there is something that is really popular to tourists, that will bring them,” he said.

The candidate also wants to see North Battleford as a more business-friendly place in the future.

Plews said if elected he is up to the task for the next four years on council.
