City updates contract for Battlefords Humane Society services at current site

Oct 5, 2020 | 4:19 PM

The City of North Battleford signed a contract to pay the Battlefords Humane Society to provide animal shelter services at the current city-owned facility at 114 Street for up to four years.

In the agreement the city will contribute $150,000 per year, plus typical building maintainance costs, dating from Jan. 1, 2019 to Dec. 31, 2021. There is the option to extend the contract to 2022 if mutually agreed upon, if the new replacement Humane Society shelter building is not ready by then.

City Corporate Services Director Jennifer Niesink said the new part of the contract is the exit clause for when the new site is completed.

“At that time the Humane Society would like to re-evaluate the contract,” she said at council’s recent meeting. “We can take a look at that at that time. We are just ready to move foreward now.”

The Battlefords Humane Society is still raising funds for its planned new facility that will be located in the R.M. of North Battleford, off Highway 4 North, just outside North Battleford.

Shelter coordinator Michelle Spark said she is satisfied with the contract with the city now settled for the interim, until the replacement building is finished.

The Battlefords Humane Society recently received a $100,000 donation from the Bill and Betty Heno Fund to help purchase the land for the new building.

Spark said it will be the Humane Society’s responsibility to raise all the funds for building the facility.

Currently, a draftsperson is working on the building plans for the site.

The local Humane Society is now in the first phase of its capital campaign for the project.

“We are in the process of getting the drawings done up,” Spark said. “Once we have those, then we can start to plan further.”
